This 17 minute film offers a sample of the feature documentary that I am making about lives and work of Nobel Laureate Elinor Ostrom (1933–2012) and Vincent Ostrom (1919–2012), co-founders of the Workshop in Political Theory and Policy Analysis. I am hoping that you will want to donate to this project so that we can share their ideas and vital work with more people.

Lin and Vincent founded established The Workshop at Indiana University as an intellectual hub for practitioners of sustainable resource use, scholars and students who today come from every continent. In 2009, Lin won the Nobel Prize in economics; shortly thereafter Time Magazine recognized her as among the 100 most influential people in the world.

Although Lin spoke plainly about the mistake we make in simplifying our complex problems and seeking a single, universal solution to such problems as climate change, the fame accompanying the Nobel Prize encouraged “sound bite” interpretations of her work. The drive for simple solutions has also overshadowed the foundational theories of her colleague and husband, Vincent Ostrom.

How did these creative people come to have the huge impact that they have had on our understanding of the commons, sustainable resource use, and self-governance? Film is an appropriate medium for bring the story of their lives and the impact of their work to audiences from the village to the city, from the classroom to the auditorium.

I hope you will want to support this project.
