People of Earth and Clouds

  1. As our media flood us with images that portray Mexico as a state ravished by violence and corruption, we tend to lose sight of the many communities within the country that fight daily for a peaceful and respectful coexistence. While these stories might not sell as much as drug violence and state brutality, we may perhaps profit from learning that it is still possible for individuals to organise themselves in communities which are both responsible and lively, closely knitted yet inclusive to others.

In the documentary People of Earth and Clouds, the filmmakers sketch a different image of Mexico. Next to the brutal violence of drug barons and the state, the country is also home to communities in which respect, inclusion and peaceful coexistence are the building blocks. People of Earth and Clouds follows a summer long a family in a Zapoteco community and zooms in on the role that the wind bands take in their lives. The film mixes life fragments with interviews to give an insight into the philosophy that lies behind this mode of living together.

The documentary focuses on the regional wind bands characteristic of the Zapoteco, Mixe and Chinanteco indigenous groups of the Sierra Juarez in the state Oaxaca. The makers explore the way in which the wind bands play their part in sustaining peaceful coexistence between the villages and the different ethnic groups. The production combines a cinematographic with an ethnographic perspective and gives ear to the rhythms, spaces and ways of living of these villages, which can serve as an inspiration for community building elsewhere.

People of Earth and Clouds is a documentary film that explores the role of wind music bands in indigenous communities of Oaxaca, Mexico. It follows a local family over the course of a summer, showing why" a village with no band, is a village with no soul”. The project aims to reveal a hidden side of Mexico: whilst the country is home to brutal drug barons and corrupt governments, people in indigenous villages turn to respect, inclusion, and music as the building blocks of their communities.
