    May 30th, 2013
    Toronto, Ontario

Overview: Among the orchestras at the forefront of developing new audiences through experimentation with new concert formats is the New World Symphony, an orchestral academy and concert producer based in Miami, Florida. This session will summarize NWS’s experience with the research and development of a range of new concert formats over the past five years, and provide an opportunity to discuss larger issues related to creativity in programming, assessment techniques, and obstacles to change. Howard Herring and Craig Hall will provide an overview of NWS’s efforts to build audiences and deep engagement. They will trace the evolution of four concert formats through multiple cycles of assessment, concert content evolution and marketing revisions. Arts researcher Alan Brown will illustrate the assessment tools used by NWS to gather audience feedback, and describe the intrinsic impact of the programs and their results. Following an initial briefing, participants will be invited to share their own stories of experimentation with concert formats, as well as their aspirations for the future.
