  2. This is a tribute to the two Asian actors, Daniel Dae Kim and Grace Park, who walked away from Season 8 of Hawaii Five-O for being paid 15% less than their White co-stars. Daniel's phrase, "The path to equality is rarely easy" is the quote that inspired us to produce this film. Thank you Daniel Dae Kim and Grace Park for taking a stand against racism, whitewashing and pay inequality!

  3. When an Asian-American man visits his White fiancé's parents, he becomes hyper aware of how he might be perceived, so he assumes the worst. Meanwhile, his fiancé's family is also concerned about how he views them. In this short film about perception and hidden biases, the viewer is given opportunities to reflect on their own assumptions about how they view others, and how others view them.

Self-Perception is another short cultural film by veteran producers and performers Michael Tow and Teja Arboleda, about the complex dance we all do around issues of race and identity. Reflecting on how minorities are viewed in mixed-cultural settings, Tow and Arboleda dig into the nuances of microaggressions and racism that are recognized by people of color. Stereotypes of Asians are sometimes considered “non-offensive”, such as being smart or good at math. Deeper, however, are the fears that many Asians in America might feel, such as being perceived as “the enemy” (Viet Cong, titans of trade imbalances, manufacturers of cheaper products, etc.). So when Asian-Americans or Asian Immigrants are in new situations with new people who are not Asian, they often become preemptively defensive, or try to blend in and disregard their racial, cultural or ethnic heritage. Meanwhile, it is not uncommon for those they meet in these instances, to also assume they (White) are being perceived as being racist or insensitive. In the end, as this short film identifies, although we may be hyper aware of the potential for misunderstandings and assumptions, most people are well intentioned and welcoming to people who may look different from themselves.

Use this film to open up dialogue in your community, on your campus or at your workplace, about race, culture, perception and hidden biases.
