"Do You Hear What I Hear?" was written in 1962 by Nole Regney and Gloria Shanyne as a plea for peace during the Cuban Missile Crisis. Bing Crosby's recording made it famous, released a month before President John F. Kennedy was assainated.
Rainer Judd/Ben Rowe " We were inspired to capture, in a world of magic and wonder, the thread of the song; that a message of Peace passes from the Wind to the Lamb, to the Shepard, and finally to the King, who's words of Peace overtake and heal the Land and "People everywhere".
Julie Doyle and The Polyphonic Spree had the brilliant idea of pairing Benjamin Rowe and Rainer Judd to create the video for "Do Ya Hear". Rainer in New York and Ben in Seattle worked remotely, first Rainer writing out the idea and then sending drawings to Ben. Nicole Vidor was brought in to illustrate the Lambs, the Shepard, the King, Slippers, and Baby. Ben added drawings as he created the key-frame animation.
Rainer Judd "I was thrilled to work with Ben, having seen his beautiful short films and videos, such as "Two Loons For Tea: Strongest Man In the World". The song is so otherwordly, the goal was to create a place that was distinctly magical and childlike, homemade but ecstatic, a place where adventure and magic is possible. The song really lead us."
Rainer Judd "Ben was phenomenally creative with very simple means and few drawings. Ben's ability to morph and move Nicole'ss expressive and distinct characters imbued the piece with a life of it's own."
Rainer Judd/Ben Rowe "We worked to create a world of a star- sparkly middle-eastern inspired magical land, where the opulence of a palace and the vastness of landscape, the beauty of an old tree, and the spirit of magical adventure came together."
Rainer Judd "From the very beginning, I felt honored to work with such a beautiful song by The Polyphonic Spree. Having directed one of Tripping Daisy's first videos, it felt as a return of some kind. Julie Doyle had the brilliant idea to pair me up with Benjamin Rowe. He was inspired and a dream to work with, from the very beginning. An atmosphere of adventure was present in the making of the piece, as it was being drawn as he animated it."
