We visited the Blackleg Ranch which is run by Jerry Doan an his two sons (forgive me for not getting their names). They run a diversified operation that includes range cattle, hunting and a real Western experience in ridin' and herdin'. They have embraced diversity (see the first field where they planted a multi-way cover crop cocktail). While this I not in the video, they have done a great job of integrating high intensity grazing with wildlife. In fact they use the cattle as tools to set back succession and have seen species diversity increase as the wildlife habitat has improved.

This visit was part of the September 2010 Soil Health workshop put on by the Burleigh Co., ND NRCS and SWCD.

Ray Archuleta is passionate about soil health and his passion is infectious. Ray Styer has been doing soil health long before it as fashionable and he has a gift for thinking biologically rather than chemically. I created this channel to display some of the video I shot of Ray A. when he was a guest speaker at my Applied Aquatic Sciences class. As far as I am concerned, this should be mandatory viewing for anyone doing anything related to environmental sciences.
