Mill Six Studio: Works by Anna Schuleit Haber

"Just a Rumor", a site-specific painting involving a pond, a face, and wild ducks.
Commissioned by the University Museum of Contemporary Art at UMass Amherst for the Fine Arts Center at the heart of the campus, this piece was a large two-dimensional painting (approx. 45 feet x 40 feet, acrylic on concrete) of an upside-down face on a vast, windowless facade adjacent to a pond and its ducks. In order to see the work, the viewer had to find the specific spot from which to view the painting across the pond and find it reflected right-side up in the water. Conceived as no more than a simple painting, the piece used the pond as a natural surface for projection. I immensely enjoyed the process of painting on a boom-lift for weeks, not knowing how it would come out, and how it would, if at all, travel across the distance. When it was completed we found out that it traveled very well across the distance, that it was large enough to be fully present in the water even during the day and that it glowed at night thanks to a single strong spotlight pointed at it. But we didn’t know that it could be actually seen in the water until the painting was completed. A rumor was then spread around campus telling students that there was a special spot from which to see the otherwise abstract painting. After the water froze for the duration of the winter, the face re-appeared on the pond in the Spring. The ducks became unwitting collaborators as they would swim through the reflection, abstracting the face, wiping it out temporarily, and letting it reappear.
