Scott Barley: Film

CLOSER by Scott Barley / 2016 / 7 min

Upon liminal spheres where dreams are woven,
Adrift between stars and the trees,
I pass closer to the golden dawn.

There’s a warmth beyond the shadow.
I feel the aurum under my eyelids,
And I hope the birds will sing.

Oh, I hope I will hear the birds sing...

Perhaps a knowledge that never comes.

for David Robert Jones (8th January 1947 - January 10th 2016)

What shocked so many of us, I believe, with David's passing, was the feeling that David Bowie was immortal, he wasn't human; he was simply a "Man who fell to Earth". In dealing with his death, and the extraordinary impact he had on me as well as many others, I wanted to pay tribute to the man and not just the persona(s), and focus on him as being a mortal.

My filmic tribute begins with frail breathing, only for it to end quite suddenly, as the moon becomes a burst of starlight, raising into the heavens, joining the other stars. The film then continues in silence, in an exploration of the after, finding meaning, solace and progression in the interconnectedness of the trees and the stars... life slows down, and then no longer moves, images become nothing more than frozen ghosts; fragments of memory in pools of black.

1:1 aspect ratio, with the final shot in 0.71:1 aspect ratio.
As always, please watch in complete darkness, with headphones.
