The first Ellen Browning Scripps Medal was presented to former First Lady and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton on April 26, 1994 at Scripps College in Claremont, California.

Established in honor of Scripps College founder Ellen Browning Scripps, the medal is awarded to women whose pioneering accomplishments, like those of Miss Scripps, have made a significant and positive difference in the life possibilities available to women, enabling all women to live more confidently, courageously, and hopefully.
