When the 113th Congress convened in January 2013, women occupied more seats than ever before in U.S. history: eighty-one in the House of Representatives and twenty women in the Senate, a significant milestone in women’s political history. This landmark achievement of 20% representation for women in one of the most powerful branches of government deserves to be celebrated and presents a new opportunity for women as a political force. Set in the political context of the post-Presidential Inauguration in Washington, D.C., FEM Inc. is bringing together like-minded collaborators to hear the stories and the vision for 2013 directly from the Senators themselves. This moment is one where women have emerged as a powerful political voice and it is our time to articulate how we envision our political strength, the agenda we wish to set for the term ahead and the goals that we wish to achieve collectively. What we do with this achievement and how we understand its potential is the topic we would like to explore in “20x’13: a (s)hero’s journey.”
We will interview all 20 female senators to hear about their personal journey to political office and their vision for the opportunity ahead for women in 2013, given women’s strength of representation. We will also hear their vision and how their constituents can support these efforts. For women interested in getting involved and wanting to do more, we will provide opportunities for them to engage more deeply in the political process. FEM Inc. can play a key role in aggregating these stories and providing inspirational role models for the everyday women who voted them into office - and the girls who will follow in their footsteps.
