Serra Mesa, a San Diego City community of nearly 25,000, is roughly bordered between Interstate 805 and Interstate 15, north of Friars Road and south of Aero Drive. Nearly 25,000 people live in Serra Mesa, named after Father Junipero Serra, and was once part of the Mission Rancho Lands granted to the Catholic Church by the King of Spain. In 1834 the land was deeded over to several men, including Don Santiago Arguello. He would divide and sell nearly 16,000 acres. In the early 1950s the navy started modern development of Serra Mesa when it built the Cabrillo Housing Project. By 1970 most of Serra Mesa's 8,374 housing units, most of them single family dwellings had been built.
