The WYNG Masters Award is a non-profit photography award initiated to both spark awareness and engage the public on socially relevant issues of great import to Hong Kong. In the 2014/2015 cycle, the focus of the WYNG Masters Award is on the theme of WASTE.

Here in Hong Kong over 6 million tonnes of municipal waste is disposed of each year - a 20% increase over the past 10 years. This increase has occurred much faster than anyone expected, placing Hong Kong's landfills under enormous pressure. Its three landfills are expected to be full by the end of this decade, making it clear that Hong Kong needs a more sustainable waste management policy.

Effective and efficient waste management has also become an important environmental justice issue. There is a growing market in the trans-boundary movement of hazardous waste from developed to developing countries, a result of the 'not in my backyard' attitude. Waste is a global problem making awareness building and education essential goals.

A series of seven videos was produced to reveal the stories behind each finalist of the WYNG Masters Award. In the first video, Lam Hoi Sin explained her photographic project “In Situ” which depicts a private home filled with excess physical materials existing in a disordered manner. She compared the struggles of changing the system and condition in a home with parents to the struggles with authorities in the city.
