The Silver Falcons are the aerobatic display team of the South African Air Force. Founded in 1967, originally flying 4 Aermacchi MB326 "Impala" aircraft, the Silver Falcons quickly established themselves as a world class formation aerobatic team and became known as the "Cockpit Ambassadors" of the South African Air Force. In 1999 the team moved onto the Pilatus Pc-7 MkII aircraft, which had recently been acquired as the new ab-initio training aircraft for the SAAF, and has henceforth been staffed by Instructors at the Central Flying School based at AFB Langebaanweg. In 2008 the aircraft were painted in a unique scheme to differentiate them form the rest of the training fleet, and the team was also expanded to a 5 ship once more. To date the Silver Falcons have flown more than 650 displays in their 45 years of existence with only 1 fatality - a safety record which is unmatched in military formation aerobatic teams worldwide. A total of 97 pilots have been selected to fly in 72 Teams thus far, and I was selected as the 94th Sliver Falcon in August 2010. I joined Team 71 and have flown 36 displays in the No 5 (Soloist) position. I have discovered a passion for producing short clips of what we do as a team and see these videos as an additional means to fulfill our objectives for the SAAF, namely:
To promote the South African Air Force
To encourage young South African's to consider a career in the SAAF
To display the inherent skills of ALL SAAF pilots
To display the capabilities of the PC-7 MkII
