1. Title: Cyber Systems Risk – an Opportunity for Model Based Engineering & Design

    Keynote Lecturer: Jerry Couretas

    Presented on: 27/07/2017, Madrid, Spain

Abstract: Cyber risk, a serious threat to system operability for both commercial and defense systems, is ripe for the application of modeling and simulation (M&S) across a system’s lifecycle for building in security at the design, development and operations phases of complex systems being developed today. In addition, M&S has the breadth and depth to evaluate the complex combinations that compose a system’s people, process and technology implementations; providing a wide opportunity horizon for today’s researchers and engineering students, in developing the methodologies, tools and techniques for both assured cyber operations and the potential for a true realization of model-based design, development and control.

  2. Title: Understanding causal modelling to support decision-making tasks in cooperative-competitive frameworks

Keynote Lecturer: Miquel Àngel Piera Eroles

    Presented on: 28/07/2017, Madrid, Spain

Abstract: Decision Support systems (DSS) are key competitive components inmost transport, manufacturing and service enterprises to succeed with the rightcoordination ofactivities considering the performance indicators designed ineach particular business model. In presenthigh flexiblemulti-stakeholder scenarios, DSS must evolve towardscooperative-competitiveframeworks in which well accepted indicators such as fairness, equity and transparencyare challenges that lacks of tools to reach a consensus. Modelling and simulation plays an important role for the functionaland non-functional integration of the DSS in which a deep understanding of thesystem dynamics isessential to avoid fragmented resolutions that focus onstrategic, tactical or operational dynamics that causes emergent dynamicsaffecting some stakeholder’s goals. The talk will examine a holistic modelling approach for a properintegration of DSSin acooperative-competitive framework and will present some relevant results thatcan be achieved by means of causal models applied to very demanding systems.

  4. The European Project Space (EPS) that took place in Lisbon on July 30th provided an insight on new research projects financing opportunities related to Horizon 2020. The EPS started with a panel entitled “Challenges in Knowledge Transfer from EU Projects”. The panel was chaired by João Sequeira (Instituto Superior Técnico / Institute for Systems and Robotics, Portugal) and had as participants Sofia Azevedo (Horizon 2020 National Contact Point -Fundação para a Ciência e Tecnologia | Agência Nacional Inovação, Portugal) and Bernardo Wagner (Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz Universität Hannover - Realtime Systems Group, Germany).

  5. Keynote Title: The Importance of Simulation Technologies for Future Democracies
    Keynote Lecturer: Catholijn Jonker
    Presented on: 29/07/2016, Lisbon, Portugal
Abstract: The work reported during the annual Simultech conferences can and should play a key role in the upholding of the rights and obligations of all citizens, industries, NGO's, and governamental organisations of democracies. The increase of data streams, the rise of the Internet of Things, the power of Machine Learning, the increased intelligence of Artificial Intelligence techniques, all will rapdily increase their potential impact on our society. To avoid drowning in the ever increasing abundance of information people will happily make use of intelligent filters, tune to the social media channels of those people they feel comfortable with. Therefore, people will run the risk of hanging around in their own filter bubbles, being confirmed in what they believed, instead of being encouraged to challenge their beliefs and convictions.I hope this talk can serve as a call to all engineers and researchers to think carefully on the possible impact of their work on our future digital society. When talking to policy makers, politicians, and people of the general public, they currently believe that social simulations will actually predict what will happen, that artificial intelligence such as Watson could make decisions for us on ethical questions such as euthanasia, the division of scarce medical resources, and, e.g., for self-driving cars, if accidents are unavoidable, who or how many to kill would be the best choice. You all know that so far and for the foreseeable future, no technique goes beyond the expressive power of the model that underlies the technique. As a result, it is our responsibility when developing those techniques, or when applying them in the real world, to carefully consider the values of the individual people and groups of people affected by the technology. We should be able to clearly explain how these values are taken into account in our designs, models and technology, and what the limitations of the systems are that are developed based on our work.Open problems/research challengesHow can we entice, encourage people to particpate regularly and with an open mind to the deliberations that will determine the polical choices in the years to come? Nudging of the unaware vs supporting the aware in self-selected behavioural change? When building decision support agents, how to avoid to fall in the pitfall of our own preferred information bubble? Can simulation of decision support technology help in debates about ethical issues? To what extent can we avoid that our technology will be abused?

+ More

The purpose of the International Conference on Simulation and Modeling Methodologies, Technologies and Applications (SIMULTECH) is to bring together researchers, engineers, applied mathematicians and practitioners interested in the advances and applications in the field of system simulation. Four simultaneous tracks will be held, covering on one side domain independent methodologies and technologies and on the other side practical work developed in specific application areas. The specific topics listed under each of these tracks highlight the interest of this conference in aspects related to computing, including Conceptual Modeling, Agent Based Modeling and Simulation, Interoperability, Ontologies, Knowledge Based Decision Support, Petri Nets, Business Process Modeling and Simulation, amongst others.
