1. Philip threw open the shutters on his bedroom windows. The June light struck him like a blow.
“Oh, fuck!” were his first words of the day.
It was three in the afternoon.
Still squinting against the glare, he made his way towards the door, almost tripping on a stray box of books. Finally, he got his hand to the door handle. He walked through the passageway that separated his bedroom from the dressing room, opened another door, and went into the drawing room. He stood there, in the dark, in his boxers. No one had opened the shutters here yet.

"A Terrible Idea" is an amusing tale of Venice in the 21st century. Prudence and Philip, the last scions of a rich English-Italian family, must come to terms with the legacy of a crumbling ancestral palazzo on the Grand Canal. If only granny were here to advise them…
Authors Andrea Perego and Daniela Biscontin (Red Moons and Cornflowers) team up here in their debut as co-writers, and deliver a delicious mix of wit and fantasy, with a touch of political incorrectness, weaving a realistically imaginary scenario of both a family and a city on the brink of extinction.

  2. Their father, Sir Augustus Pustris, had left Prudence and Philip the cumbersome legacy of this huge palazzo on the Grand Canal. It was impossible to maintain and it was impossible to make money out of it. The gothic pachyderm sat there, sleeping – or, more accurately, in a coma – with its ever darkening portraits and its ever crumbling stuccos. The lagoon was eating away the foundations and water invaded the ground floor whenever the tide was even a little higher than normal. The nineteenth century wallpapers were rolling up off the mouldering plaster. Hot water no longer reached the second floor. The entire plumbing system needed redoing. The heating went back to just after the First World War and, at this stage, it was easier to warm up with an electric radiator in one of the low-ceilinged rooms in the servants’ quarters. In the drawing room the armchairs lining the walls contained more woodworms than there were tourists in the city. Their fabrics were splitting and their wood frames creaking.

  3. From the balcony of the palazzo, had the shutters been opened, it would have been possible to see the Accademia Bridge, packed like a Biblical exodus and as raucous as the markets. The eye would have been struck by the Grand Canal, a festive rowdy circus of motorboats, taxis, vaporettos, gondolas and delivery boats, and opposite, on the other side of the Canal, the magnificent Renaissance palazzo, Ca’ Colognique, owned by a geriatric French couple. They lived on the top floor, while the rest of the place was rented for the Biennale of Art. On the ground floor, a huge fibreglass statue of a naked boy with an artichoke in his hand gazed provocatively from the water entrance.
All in all, they had done well not to open the shutters.
