SWARM: Site Explorations

  1. In a land carved by glaciers, there once roomed the massive combine. The mechanical means of production from an age when humans made locomotion out of metal, just after we learned to supplement our hunting with mechanical harvesting beasts. This version of Locust Motive is about 3 times longer than the original giving more time for the story-line, of us randomly smashing metal, to unfold.

  3. Improvised drum piece in the community hall of abandoned Fusilier, Saskatchewan. The sound of the drums in this hall was so warm and resonant that it shook the whole floor and visibly vibrates the camera. It was so loud we maxed out the mics and got this cool natural distortion-compression sound (we have discovered on retrospect that the camera's mics, though accurate, just can't take the sound pressure that the drums can produce and are constantly distorting in many of our videos).

We liked this so much we are adapting the piece for regular performance.

  5. We found this wind-downed granary in a back field at the McMaster farm outside Lafleche Saskatchewan. It was broken and lonely, we hit it to make it sing.

The Site Explorations series of improvised performances originated on a 7 week tour of Saskatchewan.

We noticed a lot of abandoned equipment in various prairie locations and started making music out of them. We also ended up visiting a ghost town (Fusilier) and playing there. Our intention is to expand the praxis to other locations and venues.

While much of our video work is more multi-layered and complex similar to the vibrant visuals of the emerging Vj scene. The Site Explorations are like a hyper-minimal approach to documentary film making. One camera is set up, there is no camera operator, there is no plot or storyline, only the recorded document of an improvised "musical" event.

Some of the pieces are intensely primal, others are more whimsical, all are about drawing out the hidden voices of the world.
