Skins - Aboriginal Storytelling & Video Game Design Workshops

Skins is a series of digital-media workshops for Aboriginal youth offered by an Aboriginally determined team of game designers, artists and educators known as Aboriginal Territories in Cyberspace.

The unique curriculum begins with traditional storytelling and proceeds to teach participants how to tell a story in a very new way--as a video game. With that foundation in place, the students then learn important skills for the production of video games and machinima, such as game design, art direction, 3D modeling and animation, sound, and computer programming.

Lessons are taught by faculty, students and graduates of the Computation Arts programme at Concordia University. They are joined by Aboriginal mentors who lend their considerable expertise as cultural consultants, as well as moral support to the young producers.

Skins aims to empower Native youth to be producers of new technologies, not just consumers of them.

The Skins Aboriginal Storytelling and Video Game Workshops integrate Aboriginal stories and storytelling techniques into the video game production process. We developed the project to encourage First Nations youth to be producers of media, not just consumers, and to experiment with ways individuals and communities might leverage digital media as a tool for preserving and advancing culture and languages, and for projecting a self-determined image out into a mediasphere awash in stereotypical portrayals of Native life.

To date, we have completed four major Skins workshops, one over the course of an entire academic year (2008 - 2009), one as a 14-day intensive workshop in 2011, another over four months in 2012, and the last one as a three-week intensive in May/June 2013. The workshops produced three videogame prototypes: Otsi:! Rise of the Kanien'keha:ka Legends, The Adventure of Skahion:ati: Legend of the Stone Giants, Skahiòn:hati: Rise of the Kanien’kehá:ka Legends, and Ienién:te and the Peacemaker’s Wampum.
