Staffordshire Hoard

This is the first attempt at making a video blog by the conservation team at Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery. It is in 2 parts. It features Deborah Cane, project manager, Dr David Symons, BMAG curator and others from the conservation team. As well as BMAG staff this video also features Fleur Shearman, a conservator at the British Museum.

The aim of video blogging is to keep the public up to date with the ongoing conservation work on the Hoard. We're still learning as we go along so apologies for the fact that the sound is sometimes a little too quiet and the editing could be improved, etc! To keep up to date with news about the Hoard visit the Staffordshire Hoard website: staffordshirehoard.org.uk

The Staffordshire Hoard is the largest hoard of Anglo-Saxon gold and silver metalwork yet found. Discovered in a field near the village of Hammerwich, near Lichfield, in Staffordshire, England on 5 July 2009, it consists of more than 1,500 items that are nearly all martial in character.

After the Staffordshire Hoard was declared treasure and valued at £3.285 million, a huge fundraising campaign to save the hoard for the nation was mounted by the Art Fund on behalf of local, regional and national partners.

The Hoard was acquired by Birmingham Museums and Art Gallery and Stoke Museums in partnership. Pieces can be seen on display in BMAG and Stoke and some of the key artefacts will go on tour to Lichfield, Tamworth and Stafford in the summer of 2011.

Research and conservation of the Hoard is on going. Conservation is taking place at Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery and the Hoard conservation team are filming regular short video blogs to show the work that they're doing. These and other Hoard related videos will feature on this channel.
