Set in Salvador Bahia, Sao Paulo, Montevideo, Buenos Aires, Santiago de Chile, La Paz, Lima, Bogota, the documentary tells stories of women and men standing behind ventanillas, kiosks, tabuleiros, pushing vans, carritos, riding bicycles loaded with refrigerators, ovens, kettles, attracting customers by chanting their products, or silently sitting at the side of the road, in the shadow of windows overlooking steep alleys. Street food trade plays an important role in contemporary urban areas in South America. It represents a viable employment opportunity for masses of vulnerable groups and it ensures food access to large part of middle and low income working classes. Nonetheless, the sector faces criticisms and criticalities: food safety is often at risk and widespread informality undermines the legitimacy of the sector. This gives rise to prejudices and discouraging policies that deem street food unhealthy and economically marginal.
The camera investigates these tangled aspects, by mixing the voices and gestures of vendors, and those of public authorities, nutritionists, economists, sociologists in a virtual debate, trying to analyze challenges, debunk prejudices, and highlight best practices.
