CPAs commonly perform a wide variety of services for clients, both attest and nonattest in nature. Attorneys who specialize in defending accounting malpractice claims agree that an engagement letter signed by the client before services are rendered is an effective defense tool, especially if the scope of the engagement is disputed. However, there currently are no authoritative standards related to minimum elements to include in engagement letters for nonattest services, other than SSARS No. 21, Section 70, Preparation of Financial Statements.

Watch Jen Louis, CPA explain how this gap led Surgent to develop the "The Essential Nonattest Engagement Letter Toolkit" as a resource to help CPAs draft engagement letters when performing some of the most common nonattest services for clients, such as bookkeeping, payroll processing, tax return preparation and more. While not authoritative, the toolkit includes practical, real-life examples and sample language that CPAs can tailor to specific client circumstances.
