  1. Creative Carbon Scotland interviews artist Catrin Evans from A Moment's Peace (UK) at Glasgow's Green: Imagining a sustainable city.

The third day of the Green Art Lab Alliance 2015 general meeting opened to the public for Glasgow’s Green: Imagining a sustainable city, a day of artist-led workshops and discussions, all of which embraced the green arts community of practice and investigated the potential of the arts to influence a more sustainable future.

We have collected thoughts from the event organisers, GALA partners and artists involved with Glasgow’s Green, asking for responses to the following questions-

What role do you think the arts and artists can play in building a more sustainable society? What is the significance of GALA and Glasgow’s Green to you and how has the project contributed to your work? What does a sustainable city look like to you?

  3. Conservation Cropping System Initiative (CCSI), a soil health initiative, connects conservation and landowners. There is nation-wide interest in this initiative. Indiana’s soils are a tremendous resource and they are a stabilizing factor in our economy. We can produce food because our soils are productive and we have invested in drainage systems which make them more productive. As we look at the future of sustainability, we need to regain the functionality and productivity of the soil that has been lost from tilling it and working it. This video interviews Mike Starkey, an Indiana farmer, who has been implementing CCSI practices.

Through the use of greenhouses and hydroponic gardening, the farm grows food that is sold throughout the city. In addition to selling produce, the farm offers workshops, volunteering opportunities, and educational tours.

“It’s kind of become this really cool little hub for anyone with an interest in growing, in consuming, in digging in the dirt and anything else,” Katelyn Repash, the lead farmer at Greensgrow, said.

As part of its community supported agriculture (CSA) projects, Greensgrow connects lower income families with healthy food options.

“We believe that people should have access to good local food and that actually have the facilities and the means to do that,” Jimmy Matesevac, the fresh food manager, said.

The farm also networks with more than 50 farms outside the city in a 150-mile radius to provide a wider range of product options at its farm stand.
