  2. When parents are working hard to create emotional connections within families and to establish positive behaviors, they can easily become stretched toooooo thin. They can become negative, brittle, or depressed, and some develop “compassion fatigue.” Deborah works with families facing this difficult reality on a regular basis. In this session she will offer ways to help parents recharge their batteries, prioritize time and energy, and explore the connection between their mood and their child’s attachment, giving parents good reasons and practical tools to take care of themselves.

  3. Getting your teen to open up and talk is a big challenge for many parents. Understanding what your teen is really saying can be an even bigger challenge. Amy is an adoptee and works with adopted and foster teens, listening to their stories and their hearts. In this session she will offer critical insights and practical tools to help parents open up new lines of communication with their adopted or foster teen about feelings, thoughts, and issues that really matter.

  4. When parents encounter behavioral, emotional, and relational challenges they often respond with discipline, structure, and control. However, many adoptive and foster parents are realizing that play is not only fun but it is the gateway to healing, connection, and repair. Melanie works regularly with parents and children helping them to experience how play can strengthen trust, creativity, memory, and the build blocks for attachment. In this fun, interactive session she will teach parents valuable insights regarding the benefits of play and practical ways to implement play with their children every day.

  5. The issue of race is present in the lives of many adoptive and foster parents. And yet, many families have lingering questions and doubts about how exactly to respond (or not). Tara knows this issue well, having grown up as a Korean-adoptee in an all-white community and now as a wife and mom with three races living under one roof. In this session she will talk honestly about the important issue of race and the realities of what it means to be a cohesive multiracial family in a color-conscious world.
