Tekron was approached by a key US customer who required a GPS signal to be transmitted from the top of a mountain over 1.5 km’s of fiber to a GPS Clock located in a Control Room within the mountain. Tekron proposed a Fiber Master/Slave solution with the TTM 01-G to be installed on the mountain top to receive the GPS signal (Master unit) and then transmit an IRIG-B Time code over the fiber cable to the TCG 02-G GPS Clock in the Control Room which has a Fiber input in lieu of a GPS Antenna input (Slave unit). This simple cost effective model provided the customer with an ideal time synchronization solution.

  2. Tekron was approached by an integrator who, in a single installation, required an IRIG-B signal with a local time offset, as well as a second signal with UTC time. In the power industry, such requirements are not common and for this reason, the client had originally installed two clocks – a costly solution to a seemingly simple problem. Tekron, with the TTM 01-G were able to provide a solution using a single clock, in a compact form factor. This highly cost-effective solution also helped the customer in reducing the risk of equipment failure within their network.

With the evolution of technologies such as Line Differential Protection, Phasor Measurement and Sampled Values, Smart Substations require a new unprecedented level of accuracy and time sync availability, not previously required in the Industry. The Transmission System Operators in Philippines required a GNSS Clock designed and built for substation applications. The solution required the Substation clock to provide time synchronization to facilitate their IEC 61850 aspirations (PTP Power Profile, NTP, Optical PPS), and in addition support legacy time protocols (IRIG-B, serial time strings, 1 per 10). Moreover, the system required multiple levels of failover; where in the event of GNSS outage, the clock will revert to the Telecommunications Network and sync to the PTP Telecom profile Grandmaster, or in the absence of PTP availability on the Telecommunications network, revert to its own internal Atomic Clock reference module.
