Stacie Chaiken's : The Dig: death, Genesis + the double heliX

  1. American archaeologist Sally Jenkins — based in Los Angeles, expertise ancient DNA — is summoned to a dig in the ancient Arab-Hebrew town of Jaffa, Israel. The Israelis have found a deep underground tomb, a stone sarcophagus. She's the only person in the world who can tell them what it is. It's top-secret work, and nothing is as it seems.

Here, having just arrived in Israel, her "driver" Rashid takes Sally on the short ride from her hotel on the sea in Tel Aviv to ancient Jaffa. On the way, she recognizes a corner pharmacy, which triggers memories of her first visit to this place, when she came as a student for her first archaeological dig.

Entering Jaffa, Rashid recounts the bloody ancient and modern history of that long contested port.

The DIG is a solo play, written & performed by Stacie Chaiken, with original music composed and performed by Yuval Ron. Directed by Pamela Berlin; video design by Dmitry Kmelnitsky; sound design by Tim Labor.

This performance was recorded at the April 2019 premiere of the music at Gloria Kaufman Dance Theatre, UCLA.

  3. An excerpt from The DIG, a solo play with live music composed and performed by Yuval Ron. Filmed April 2019 at Glorya Kaufman Theatre, UCLA.

American archaeologist Sally Jenkins is summoned to a dig in the ancient Arab-Hebrew city of Jaffa. Sally has invented a method for analyzing ancient DNA. The Israelis tell her they've found 4000 year-old horses in an underground tomb. Sally is the only person in the world who can give them an ID on bones that old; they need her to come right away. When she balks at flying 9000 miles for horses and offers to send an assistant, they offer her scads of money. She flies.

In this excerpt, Sally's "guide" Rashid, a Palestinian, drives her from the hotel to the site in Jaffa. They meet their Israeli partner David, and make their way down into the tomb.

I offer this excerpt as an illustration of a fully realized production, with live music, rich sound score, and video. These scenes explore history and place, as will the project I propose for The MAP Fund.
