The Makers

  1. This is the 3rd part of our documentary series uncovering the process of making Scandinavian Damascus steel or pattern welded knife. Our team recently has joined one of the most skilled bladesmiths in the Baltic States - Chris. This movie is a dedication to him with an honor to his skills and experience.

Special thanks to the band Foreign Fields from Nashville for allowing us to use their song as a soundtrack for our documentary.

"It is a tragedy of the first magnitude that millions of people have ceased to use their hands as hands. Nature has bestowed upon us this great gift which is our hands. If the craze for machinery methods continues, it is highly likely that a time will come when we shall be so incapacitated and weak that we shall begin to curse ourselves for having forgotten the use of the living machines given to us by God."

  4. Designer and maker Rupert Blanchard creates bespoke furniture from discarded drawers, secondhand pieces and scrap material, but is adamant that his work should not be considered part of the upcycling trend. In 2011 Blanchard won 'Best Product Design' at The British Design Awards, and during London Design Festival he opened up his East London studio as part of the Shoreditch Design Triangle. Blanchard takes Crane.tv on a day out to visit some of his favourite local haunts around Brick Lane and Bethnal Green including a welder, a junkshop and a scrapyard.

  5. Smith joined forces with Victorian grower, gatherer, hunter and cook Rohan Anderson to build a pioneer-style cold smokehouse on his property just outside Ballarat. This short film by Melbourne-based production studio Commoner captures the vision of the smokehouse build and the story of Anderson’s motivation. A step-by-step account of the process was featured in Smith Journal volume four. Find out more about the project: http://bit.ly/NV2g9e Learn more about Smith: http://bit.ly/sDgUHh

These are the growers and the bakers. The builders. The cutters. The sanders and the polishers.

They create our world.

These are the makers.
