1. Real-time interaction with industrial robots

On September 26th the Vienna Tourist Board will be hosting an event where Alex Kiessling is creating artworks not only in Vienna, but simultaneously in Berlin, at Breitscheidplatz, and London, at Trafalgar Square.
Alex is using two industrial robots (ABB IRB 4600) who are fed by real-time tracking data from Vienna via satellite connection to the remote cities. The result will be three artworks that are later brought together to built a triptych.

By reading data from an infra-red touch frame and a Microsoft Kinect we analyze the movements of the artist and then the data is translated to feed the coordinates to the robots’ servers — difficult process since the robots’ software was not designed to interpret real-time data. The robots then recreate the movements of the artist and draw their interpretation of Alex’s drawing in real time. The data will be transmitted from Vienna to Berlin and London using a dedicated satellite connection.

  3. An old fact from the craft of woodworking forms the basis for this project. Oak contains a highly concentration of Tannic Acid which reacts with the iron oxide and results in a dark blue till black color. This critical reaction transforms in this project to an added value.

Tannic Acid or Iron oxide in liquid form is applied on the materials. One element is applied on the material that contains the other element naturally. Two totally different materials will have a striking change into approximately the same color. They are affected and therefore come together by the chemical reaction. This project is the beginning of a broad and devoted research in the world of Oak and his Tannic Acid.

  5. The copper lights will hang directly at the ceiling. A cool led light reflects inside the copper light. The lamp creates a clear light centre surrounded with a warm copper semblance. Walnut parts fits precisely in the ends of the copper tube. The different parts are shaped by hand on the same machine, the lathe.
