Snow Goose hunting in the eastern United States was stopped in 1916 because of low population levels. Hunting was allowed again in 1975 after populations had recovered. Since then, their populations have continued to grow, to the point that some areas of tundra nesting habitat are starting to suffer.
By the 1970s they switched to worrying about keeping goose numbers in check. In the late 1990s both Canada and the United States began to permit extra hunting to reduce Snow Goose populations.
The 2012 Colorado elk hunt was planned to be a backcountry, high altitude adventure up until Jeff broke his leg a week before the hunt. The cast slowed him down a little, but we still managed to get in the middle of the elk during the September rut!

Each year we spend a couple days in late February on the Central Fly-Way chasing the migration of the snow geese from the southern states heading back to the north country. It's an impressive migration and a great time as we participate in the conservation efforts to preserve balance in the tundra.
