reveries of a solitary walker.

  1. shot this in the spring of 2012, shifting focus from the street scene to the flaneur. i like the interaction between the two.

  2. i moved to berkeley in january to attend cal, having lived in los angeles my entire life. i even sold my love, deborah, a 1970 ford mustang, to finance the move. and my life has changed for the better as a result.
i walk everywhere. and, i'll be honest, pretty often i'll have a little schmoke before i head out for errands or what have you. but i end up having these amazing walks, more often than not involving campus, always involving music. then having read and fell in love with rousseau's Confessions. well. here we are.

so this is an experiment. my clips are not meant to be perfect. they are short strings of moments during a walk of mine, photographed in real time to whatever i happen to be listening to just then. sometimes i shoot with my little canon elph, sometimes the iphone. the only goal i have, really, is to improve over time.

for this one, i asked a friend of mine to choose a song that means a lot to her, but told her that i didn't want to know the reason for its importance. shot organically.

playing around with saturation, perspective and filters again.

  3. in the moment it's hard to tell what i have. if i have something. or anything. it's also difficult to know if the clip will even fit with its song.

this one ended up being a simple story of a shadow.

  4. * "reveries of a solitary walker" is an experimental film series which riffs on the idea of the "flaneur," the urban explorer of 19th century france and made famous by writers such as baudelaire and rousseau. each film is shot in one take, organically in real time, to whatever i happen to be listening to at the time.

i set out to shoot one long pan, in this one, basically to see how my reflection would translate, if at all.

this one is, most definitely, not perfect in the filmic sense. but it's a perfect reverie.

    "beautiful way."

shot this on a walk to trader joe's, focusing solely on my shadow throughout.

i walk everywhere. and, i'll be honest, pretty often i'll have a little schmoke before i head out for errands or what have you. but i end up having these amazing walks, more often than not involving campus, always involving music and introspection and the joy of walking my city. then having read and fell in love with both rousseau's confessions and paris peasant. well. here we are.

so this is an experiment. my clips are not meant to be perfect. they are short strings of moments captured as i walk, photographed in real time to whatever i happen to be listening to just then. my only goal, really, is to improve over time.
