The Sound Stage 音你而乐

This is the first episode I have uploaded to Vimeo. I particularly like this one because I think the images and music are quite beautiful.

This band, 16 Minutes, have been gigging around China for several years. They recently toured the country with Sophie Koh, a pop singer-songwriter from Australia of Chinese-Malay decent.

The Sound Stage《音你而乐》is a documentary series about independent music in China. I've been following the music scene in Beijing since 2007, and I have been producing this series for China Radio International since 2012. I'm working on the 59th episode at this time of writing. I direct, shoot second camera, edit, host, produce and assist with translations for this series.

Each episode features a local Chinese band or solo musician with an interview and performance of one of their original songs. The series is presented with Chinese and English subtitles.

The Sound Stage has also been a radio show since August 2013, broadcasting on FM stations across China every Saturday night from 6 to 7 pm. During this hour I play about seven or eight tracks of Chinese independent and underground music. There is no other radio show in the country like this, and probably not one even in the whole world. If you want to listen, I have uploaded all the episodes to Bandcamp:

What does it mean to be a young musician in modern China during the apex of the Internet age at the dawn of the new millennium?

I've been following the music scene in Beijing since 2007, and I have been producing this series for China Radio International since 2012.

The Sound Stage (音你而乐 in Chinese) is a documentary series about independent music in China. Each episode features a local Chinese band or solo musician with an interview, providing you with a snapshot into the life and music of the subject, as well as a performance of one or two of their original songs. Over 50 episodes now and counting. Episodes do not need to be viewed in sequential order, and when viewed as a whole, the entire series is a collage of the contemporary music scene in mainland China. The series is presented with both simplified Chinese and English subtitles.

The Sound Stage has also had a radio format since August 2013, broadcasting on FM stations across mainland China every Saturday night from 6:05 to 7 pm, during which I play about seven or eight tracks of Chinese independent and underground music. There is no and has never been another radio show in the country like this, and probably not one even in the whole world! If you want to listen, I have uploaded all the episodes to Bandcamp:
