The Voice and the Lens

Video documentation of I Am Sitting In A Room (Alvin Lucier, 1969) performed at Ikon Gallery (Birmingham UK) on November 8th 2012. Part of The Voice & The Lens festival, co-curated by Ikon and Third Ear.

Scott Wilson (voice, tape) and Film Ficciones (video).

In this piece, Lucier’s most famous work, a narrator records a text, plays this back into the room and re-records it. This second-generation recording is then played back into the room and recorded once again, and so the cycle continues such that each recording itself becomes an original that is then copied. As the piece develops, the spoken text dissolves into sound, taking on the resonant frequencies of the room. For this performance, the idea is echoed using a video playback process with multiple channels/screens to shadow the inherent degradation of the live sound.

Documented by Jo Potts and Film Ficciones.
