Thomas John Bacon

  1. A REDUX of the previous version of The Lived Body, this was showcased within The Island at Tempting Failure in 2014. Here, the previously exhibited version from Glasgow was redeveloped in collaboration with sound designer Lee Chaos, allowing further expansion over the orchestration and collaborative live manipulation of the sound between both. The work was also faster and featured intensified sound, light and blood loss.

Black-out became an important part of this performance and is captured here in the video unedited in order to allow the viewer to appreciate the soundscape.

  2. Performing as TJB/FKA, a collaborative action between Thomas John Bacon & FK Alexander.

This was a collaborative elemental action that creates a dialogue around control & reciprocity in the ontology between two bodies and the elements that surround them.

PRESENCE/s was shown as part of Place. Rhythm. Pulse. An ongoing programme at Ausland, in Berlin. Many thanks to Frank Foge for the video footage and Gretchen Blegan + all the team at Ausland for their facilitation and support.

NB: the strobe effect on the video was due initially to the extremely heavy bass present in the first 30 mins of the performance which caused the camera equipment to continue to malfunction thereafter and resonate with the fluorescent lighting. No strobe lights were used in this performance.

This residency and performance was made possible through the generous support of Ausland.

  4. Inspired by a ritual known as Matam, which takes place in the Shiite ceremony of Ashura, PASSION/Flower transcends its origins, becoming an action that opens the body to a trance state of rhythm & ritual practice.

Performed here by Ernst Fischer and Thomas John Bacon together in 2014 in Germany.
The work was exhibited again by the pair in 2015 in the UK.

  5. The title of the work reflects a term coined by Maurice Merleau-Ponty whose theories have influenced the practice of the artist, Thomas John Bacon. The work is an active deconstruction of the Being of the artist, through the gaze of each individual witness. Creating a multiplicity of Self/s through Flesh and other, the action reconstructs Being beyond sight to immerse all in the space of the Body through sound.

+ More

Thomas John Bacon is an artist whose work focuses upon the conception of the body, Being & the idea of a multiplicity of Self/s in performance. His work can be located within the framework of performance art & philosophical/phenomenological investigations that look to de/construct & challenge perception, alongside the assumed liminal barriers of body-based art.

He is known for creating artworks that capture a space, environment, or period of time that regardless of scale, will often make intense, sometimes visceral, often beautiful pieces that may often place the body in extremis.
