Their Lives, Our Voices 2010

One of the most important, yet most neglected ways in which we can create a humane world is through education. Education is prevention. While activism to stop atrocities is critical, without educating a generation with the knowledge, tools, and motivation to be conscientious choice-makers and engaged change-makers we may perpetually be putting out the fires of cruelty and destruction.
Imagine, instead, that we raise a generation with reverence, respect, and a sense of responsibility, with the critical and creative thinking skills to make a difference. This is the goal of humane education, and when activists turn their attention to teaching others, they often find that their work has never been so positive and effective. During this keynote address, Zoe Weil, president of the Institute for Humane Education will share ideas, tools, and stories about the ways in which we can create a humane world through education.

Their Lives Our Voices has brought together both local and national leaders to educate attendees on diverse topics such as the impact of our food choices, adopting and adhering to ethical diets, lobbying for animal rights, leading compassionate lifestyles across culture and time, and simple steps individuals can take to improve the lives of animals.

Compassionate Action for Animals, the host organization of TLOV, embraces diverse avenues for animal advocacy, but in particular stresses diet change and sustainable farming, as the current “factory farm” model causes the greatest harm to animals in both severity and number. Increasing consumer demand for local, ethically produced foods by reducing our consumption of animal products is perhaps the easiest and most economical way to make the difference in the lives of animals.
