Thank you so much, Hello Ukulele! He was so right - I LOVE IT! Still can't believe this was about us. http://helloukulele.com/post/57030474130/we-have-a-july-winner
If you're interested in more of the backstory, read here:
My boyfriend was a writer. He didn't sing, and he didn't play instruments. I, on the other hand, do both. His friends used to think he was legitimately tone deaf. Jury's still out on that one. When we first got together I would get so sad sometimes because he wouldn't sing with me -- I told him, "I don't care what it sounds like! It can be in 5 different keys for all I care. I just like it when you sing to me, the same way you like it when I sing to you!" He'd gotten better about it over time, and (believe it or not) his vocals had actually improved with the confidence! And that's why this surprise was so incredible.
He practiced this song for months. That's right, MONTHS! It was originally supposed to be an anniversary surprise in early August, but that didn't work out. He never tried to keep it a secret that he was up to something, but I still had no luck figuring out what it was. I was in total suspense until Valentine's Day when he finally played and sang me the song on my/our new ukulele. That he won for me. In a contest. All because he professed his undying adoration. For me!
Editing this video was months later, and I was still pretty moon-eyed about the whole thing. I edited the video -- because my amazing gift also came with homework -- and I spent the entire time tearing up all over again! It's a miracle any of the shots are straight at all.
So fellas, chicas: if you're looking for a show-stopping, grossly romantic, simply fantastic gift to give the one you love, do something like this. Get out of your comfort zones, and do that thing your girlfriend/boyfriend/husband/wife loves so much. You won't regret it.
