Grade 5 Ancient Cultures Slideshow, Part 1
"Those who have not learned the lessons of the past are doomed to repeat them."
The immersion in ancient mythologies, religions, warfare, and statecraft give the Fifth Grader a foundation for all subsequent historical study, and an impetus for living on the earth. We look at the changing tableau of Waldorf student work in the Ancient Cultures blocks that recur throughout the year.
Taught at the very beginning of the school year, Geometric Drawing introduces the Sixth Grader to "non-intellectual thinking," providing an external correlative to the inner experiences that will manifest later. Students work with the simplest of elements of design - circles and straight lines, created with compasses and drafting triangles -- to create drawings of remarkable complexity and dynamism.
