  1. reading tosca – an exciting new choreographic reading of the Puccini opera – is not a staging of this opera but rather a contemporary new composition in movement and sound.
In a polyphonic tableau the choreography unifies cruel poetry and discord, horrific images, sensitive portraits and increasingly ironic and critical reflections of society. Puccini’s composition is deconstructed and the smallest particles appear as though originating from a hidden space. Thus the music is also a poetic metaphor of fragility as well as a mirror of the opera’s inherent destructive power. Reality, desires and visions fall to pieces. Everything can be reversed into its opposite: violence, torture, feelings of powerlessness, uncertainty and desire are intertwined into a brutal world full of inner conflicts.
»To take one’s leave from clear understanding, cross an unseen border« and take a look at the dark side of our hearts... It is not a melodrama, but rather a search for subtleties, hidden things: trepidation, daring, passion, love, obsession, intrigue, manipulation, misuse of power and betrayal. These hidden dimensions are, however, subliminally present at every moment. It is a story that could repeat itself at any time, yesterday, today, always, tosca toujours. reading tosca: what is heard, dreamt, felt and projected. The borders in the body, space and time disappear, between them thousands of moments live, though the abyss is always vis-à-vis... Disconcertingly timeless: everything wants, everything fails.

The new piece reflects primal human characteristics. Pain and passion belong to our strongest emotions and comprise tremendous energies. They can be a driving force, as well as a trigger of tragedies and have always mirrored human desires and abysses. In „the thing I am“ they appear as tableaux of deliquescent, yet pained and passionately swaying bodies in which blase strength and fragility. Saturated with a sensibility that penetrates under the skin, they interlace the intensity of feelings into the scenes of touching vulnerability.

In contrary to a world, increasingly marked by superficial perception and dulling society, in which very few things barely move us instead of shaking us to our foundation, the new piece aspires to vehemence and truthfulness of feelings. Sensibility and revolt, plight and devotion interweave into a hybrid panorama, whilst a crushed beauty slumbers behind the more tangible affliction. “the thing I am” being an anatomy of passion, in which unusual and hidden enthrall our senses.

    press reviews
„The burning under the skin... Last weekend the audience celebrated eight dancers, four men and four women, as well as the production team for the tremendously intense »Daydreams in Movement«. With the vehemence of the multilayered pictorial inventions and physical presence, in the piece »wut« (2012) the ensemble had already created in dancing an energy field composed of pieces of the broken „I-selves“ conjuring a „We“ only as a fiction. „the thing I am“ further pursues this fundamental theme. The performance contours and condenses the „I“ isolated within the society with countless precisely calculated movement details, dance scenes and image sequences. Toula Limnaios seeks after life and consistently asks for the causes of unrelatedness, of failure....“

“Toula Limanios succeeds in creating ensemble scenes of associative power: the eternal odyssey of the octet of people standing and falling with bags and knapsacks on their backs: playing tennis with the wall, whilst before and behind each of them someone is breaking down. High Intensity and extreme acceleration of movement in the unison tableau of robotic functionality; human bodies deconstructed, fragmented – the hand reaches for the heart shortly. Physical violence takes place on the white mattress-wall. One becomes a witness of permanent disabilities and reciprocal paralysises. The constellations of figures are ambivalent, just like in the works of Edward Hopper. Inhee Yu rips off the imaginary skin of her face over and over again. The clothes are being changed, yet the colorfulness brings no life. While the isolated “I-selves” laughingly revolve around themselves in despair. Karolyna Wyrwal and Giacomo Corvaia wriggle in overwrought joy, with their new skin, right in the face of the audience.
    »the thing I am« -»Daydreams in Movement« - a performance that truly gets under the skin“

„New premiere, the secured performance venue, sold-out shows and tours worldwide – the dance company Toula Limnaios is highly successful, from the very beginning the superb dancers appear as purveyors of emotions, their duets take on increasing sharpness and their actions on radicalism. Driven by the suggestive and complex music of the composer Ralf R. Ollertz, a couple slaves away desperately throwing and lifting each other in the cushioned corner, another one, with distorted faces and earphones, appears as a caricature of modern absence of communication. With her poetically expressive and eidetic language of movement, the Greek choreographer Toula Limnaios stands completely in the tradition of the German dance theater. She is not interested in formalisms, her representations rather emphasize emotional universality and widely interpretable common comprehensibility. Thereby, she has conquered the distinct, loyal, attentive and enthusiastic audience of all ages and beyond theater circles.

“if I was real” is a first sketch, inspired by Camus’ early literary essay “l’envers et l’endroit/ light and shadow“. The shadows are the fear of the unknown, the silence of the world and the blatant lack of control over what the world is. The light symbolizes beauty, acceptance of this incomprehensible world.

Camus: “There is not love of life without despair about life.” We are torn between these two poles, between feeling and ratio, our mind constantly swinging back and forth.

“if I was real” reflects paradoxes and ambiguities. The composition develops as a collection of fragmentary images alive with the mysteries of hidden coherencies. Free from the heavy weight of a specific “meaning”, they appear foreign on the one hand, but on the other, also familiar in a way that cannot quite be described.

A choreographic collection, a thin line between the recognizable reality of everyday life and a bizarre duplicate/dream world.

  5. anderland explores our longing for a tangible reality, the attempt to leave behind some trace of ourselves, the pursuit of happiness, the desire for personal history and roots - all this against the backdrop of an acute awareness of the impermanence of life. It questions our perception of and relationship with time, recalls the burden of stained memories, having forgotten how to forget, constantly clinging to the past.

Pausing in the moment and yet floating in time. Seven performers glide through delicately sculpted scenes as if chasing shadows – near and far – familiar and yet foreign. anderland drifts through a beautiful and wistful echo of a moment and shimmers as a fictive place, an intimate frontier, melancholy beauty, eerie occurrence and tender elegy.

press comment on every single day (previous production)
"As almost always with Toula Limnaios, every single day is a piece with immense reverberations. This time however, it is neither irritating, disturbing nor enigmatic-baffling like some of her earlier productions. She also wanders less in surreal dream worlds or magical and hypnotic landscapes of the soul. This piece is an almost bitter case of realism – a new step in her development as choreographer, a production that reaffirms her exceptional position in the dance landscape. The more so as she now possesses full command of her choreographic craft with playful ease – it is a pleasure to see how she arranges her ideas and her young dancers, her new company, in constantly new images and scenes that simultaneously play with the stylistic device of repetition." “Toula Limnaios’ choreographies are always documents of destabilization. Her existentialistic plunges to the depths of the soul have earned her an exceptional position in the German dance scene. The sophisticated visual aesthetics of the pieces never cease to impress. On her tours abroad, she is celebrated as a prime example of Berlin dance.” (Tagesspiegel, S. Luzina)
