Mike Veny, founder of TransformingStigma.Com, is a sought after mental health stigma expert, keynote speaker, and professional drummer. He delivers entertaining, engaging, and educational experiences to conferences and events throughout the world.

After suffering from a devastating mental health breakdown in August of 2011, Mike made the decision to use his speaking and drumming skills to serve others. As a person who painfully struggles with mental health challenges every day, he is committed to transforming the stigma surrounding mental health.

Let’s not wait for another mass shooting or suicide to talk about mental health.

f you are looking for a proven professional who can offer a fresh perspective on mental health stigma, practical steps to transform it into strength, and connect with your audience, then you’ve come to the right place. What sets Mike apart from other presenters is that he takes the time to listen and understand your vision, goals, and objectives before he determines if he is the right fit for you. If he is the right fit for you, then he will create a plan to take your event to the next level.

Mike discovered his path as a speaker through convincing the staff at psychiatric hospitals to discharge him 3 times during his childhood. In addition to being hospitalized as a child, he was expelled from 3 schools, attempted suicide, and was medicated in attempts to reduce his emotional instability and behavioral outbursts. By the fifth grade, Mike was put in a special education class. Aside from getting more individualized attention from the teacher, he learned that pencil erasers make a great sound when tapped on a desk. He had no idea that drumming would become his career or his path to recovery.

Today Mike is fiercely committed to the idea that transforming the stigma into strength starts with people taking an honest look at themselves. His core message is “Stigma starts with shame. Shame leads to silence. Silence leads to self-destructive behavior and suicide”.

During his workshops and keynotes, Mike encourages attendees to:

Overcome shame through taking care of taking care of themselves daily.
Overcome silence through keeping the subject of mental health in everyday conversation (and community).
Overcome self-destructive behavior (especially suicidal behavior) through consistently looking for teachable moments.
Satisfied clients rave about the powerful impact Mike has had on audiences. He inspires attendees to leave his presentations inspired with new ideas and simple action steps that they can apply immediately.

Here’s what some meeting planners have had to say about Mike:

Sophie Clark of NAMI Washington, D.C. – “Mike Veny participated in our 2013 community mental health awareness conference and was nothing short of outstanding. For our occasion it was mental illness, however I believe his candor, humor, and transparency are applicable in a variety of corporate and community settings.”

MaryBeth Schneider fo NYSARC – “He has an innate ability to connect with people, draw them out, and get them to participate. This is not an easy task when you are responsible for closing a two and a half day conference on a Friday.”

Jesicah Rolapp of the Los Angeles Leadership Academy - “Mike’s ability to connect with students is a talent that very few adults have. His ability to address a group of 200 students and have them engaged for well over an hour shows just how deep his talent runs.”

You can feel confident in choosing Mike to address the subject of mental health stigma effectively. As a professional speaker in the National Speaker’s Association (NSA), a member of the Global Speakers Federation (GSF), Meeting Professionals International (MPI) and Toastmasters International, he’s presented in front of audiences consisting of youth, parents, adults, and professionals. His perspectives have been featured on the Healthy Minds Canada blog and on the radio show, NBC 40 News, WKOK Sunrise News Radio 1070.

Beyond speaking, bringing interactive drumming to mental health events allows Mike to share his full time job with world. When he’s not speaking, he’s memorizing music, rehearsing, performing, and recording with a variety of artists. As a Member of the Board of Directors of The Fender Music Foundation & writer for Corporate Wellness Magazine, Mike enjoys helping others get the opportunity to experience music making. As a professional drummer, his sponsors include Gretsch Drums, Vic Firth Drum Sticks, Toca Percussion, Aquarian Drumheads, Gibraltar Hardware, Gator Cases, Crescent Cymbals and KickPort.
