Travelling Apples

We were pleasantly surprised by our experience in Brussels, given the bad rap the city gets. I'm not quite sure why some people consider it ugly, particularly given it boasts arguably the most beautiful town square in Europe, including Prague. Sure it has it's fair share of ugly buildings dotted throughout the city centre, and the reason they were approved to be built is beyond me, but nonetheless the city has plenty going for it.

Some of our highlights included:

- The Grand Place: the aforementioned most beautiful square in Europe
- Street Art: Fantastic murals dedicated to the country's fascination with comics
- Manneken Pis: An overrated site with fantastic stories
- Stock Exchange, Théâtre Royal de la Monnaie, St Nicolas’ Church, Cathedral of St. Michael and St. Gudula, Royal Palace of Brussels: All beautiful buildings
- Galeries Royales Saint Hubert: Beautiful undercover shopping preceinct
- Place Royal: Lovely intersection/square surrounded by museums
- Mont des Arts: Grand gardens with excellent views of the city
- Palace of Justice and Marolles: Monstrous building overlooking a revitalised and trendy neighbourhood

What made our stay even more enjoyable was the generosity and friendliness of our Couchsurfing host Maite and her daughter Johanna, and her flatmates Andoni, Alice and their two children. Sharing stories about our travels, eating meals together, discovering more about Brussels and making new friends ensured our visit to Brussels was all the more memorable than it otherwise would have been.
