Correspondance - COMMUNICATION SHRINE (Video Installation):

This video is one of three that are displayed in the work COMMUNICATION SHRINE - an interactive installation that is housed within an ordinary refrigerator. It is part of a presentation focusing on paintings and objects related to the making of a future science fiction film titled M-GOLIS. The animation, which is yet to be completed, will be the fifth in a series of films relating to the five elements of matter, earth, air, fire, water and ether, with M-GOLIS focusing on ether.

The narrative of M-GOLIS is set on a foreign planet of the same name in the year 2202. The planet ravaged by chemical wastes, is sparsely populated with prisoners whose sentence is to reside there and reverse the pollution by distributing mycoremediating mycelium spores that decompose toxic wastes. The film follows the journey of inmate Lieutenant Aurelio Swimm’s incarceration on the chemically polluted planet, where his consciousness has been altered by his extreme isolation and exposure to a toxic and increasingly hallucinogenic environment.

Upon opening the refrigerator installation COMMUNICATION SHRINE, one encounters the world of Swimm more intimately through found objects, personal trinkets and three videos running simultaneously. Primarily intended as a communication portal to earth for the lone Lieutenant, this object has taken on a sacred totemic role, serving as an altar to things he considers precious in his solitary existence. By switching between her own creation, and that of her imagined character’s, Khorramian plays with multiple possibilities that allow her to examine the relationship between art and audience.

Khorramian’s work takes theater and the spectacle as its point of departure, to explore aspects of human nature and emotional states of consciousness, and the possibilities of drawing as a medium. Her work combines animation and drawing in order to capture and emphasizes particular stages of the art-making process. These animations look to cinema in its juxtaposition of moving image and sounds. They look to drawing and printmaking for the possibilities of chance accidents, the manipulation of found material, and the mark of the human trace.

Her experimental animations use her own monoprints and drawings as tools for storytelling. Stop-motion animation can alter the representation of time, giving mundane scenarios a mythical, out-of-time quality allowing her to stage narratives that are subjective accounts of historic event, ancient myths, and biblical themes. By removing cultural and historic specificity from these narratives, she examines the essence of their visual forms and emotional content.

As much as the work is a fiction, it plants itself firmly into the physical realm of human life, and grounds them in specific events. All the same, these scenarios are subverted and de-familiarized through technical interventions (enlarging, erasing, re-drawing) in order to uncover a deeper lever of human experience – to ponder the slippery bounds between experience and the imaged, the real and the ethereal.
