Session Nine from the Multiversity International Conference on Decolonising Our Universities held in Penang, Malaysia, 27-29 June 2011 under the auspices of Universiti Sains Malaysia and Citizens International. The conference brought together scholars, activists, students and journalists from Asia, Africa, the Mideast and elsewhere to address the problem of Eurocentrism in the universities of the Global South and to explore alternatives and paths of resistance.

Chaired by Mani Shankar Aiyar, Member of the Upper House of the Indian Parliament, the ninth session of the conference centers around two main presentations:

Molefi Kete Asante, Professor of Africology at Temple University in the USA, speaking on 'The Philosophical Bases for an African University.'

Samuel B. Tindifa, Academic Registrar at Marcus Garvey Pan-Afrikan University in Uganda, delivering a paper on behalf of Babuuzibwa Mukasa Luutu, Vice Chancellor of Marcus Garvey Pan-Afrikan University, on the topic of 'Bringing Back the Community into University.'

The presentations are followed by lively exchanges, particularly on the question of Afrocentricity and its relationship with other centricities, among the main speakers and conference participants, including Loo Seng Piew of Albukhary International University, Shadrack Gutto of the Institute for African Renaissance Studies in South Africa, C.K. Raju of Universiti Sains Malaysia, Vinay Lal of University of Delhi, Ashis Nandy of the Centre for the Study of Developing Societies, Abdolhossein Khosropanah of Iran, Norma Alvares of the Bombay High Court, Ataur Rahman Khan of Bangladesh, Augustine Nwoye of University of Dodoma in Tanzania, and Syed Farid Alatas of the National University of Singapore.
