25zero

In December 2015 Tim Jarvis and his 25zero team summit one of the last glacial mountains in Uganda, Mount Stanley. The world must act on climate change.

After passing through dense forest, other worldly bogs and landscapes replete with fairy-tale trees, colourful birds and the thousand strange sounds of the remote mountains the long trek finally leads to the glacier beneath Margherita Peak. This was the very same glacier the Duke of Abruzzi climbed in 1906 and which, at the time, must have felt far larger than today.

Beyond that, they reached the summit of the highest peak in Uganda and the third highest peak in Africa. Once everything was covered in ice, but now the summit is little more than bare rock and pockets of remaining ice.

The glacier below is also slowly but surely disappearing and the moment to reflect brings about an air of sadness amongst the team. The lessons here for humanity are obvious. We cannot go on to allow climate change to go on unfettered as we have over the last two decades. We need a meaningful agreement between all parties at COP21.

It needs to be equitable and it needs to really count.

Climate change is the biggest threat facing humanity.
Melting glacial ice is one of the clearest indicators of this complex issue. Nowhere is it more apparent than where you’d least expect to find ice – at the equator. There are now only 25 mountains with glaciers at the equator. Within a quarter of a century these glaciers will be gone due to climate change - in some cases, far sooner.
In Nov 2015 I will be climbing 3 of the world's 25 remaining glacial mountains: Carstensz Pyramid in Asia, Mount Stanley in Africa and Chimborazo in South America. Images of the rapidly disappearing glaciers will be beamed around the globe and into the COP21 conference. I am doing these climbs to demonstrate the severity of climate change and the urgent action required by COP21 countries and their leaders.
Put simply: 25 Mountains. Zero latitude. 25 years. Zero ice.
