TOBIAS YVES ZINTEL
Acid and Ice Cream, 2008
HD video, 13 min, color/sound
Acid and Ice Cream is a deconstruction of the medium of film, combined with a reflection on the structuring of human identity.
The film consists of three basic visual elements: photographed portraits of young men, extreme close-ups of plant formations, and photographs of refrigerators and wooden cupboards, out of which drips melting colored ice. The young men are depicted in a way that recalls portraits of Hollywood movie stars from the 1950s and ‘60s such as Humphrey Bogart, Paul Newman, Dean Martin, and James Dean.
Through the figure of the actor—who plays a character that is not himself—and the staged presentation of the film star, Zintel directs attention to the fact that identity is constructed and per-formatively manufactured. Right at the start, the image of a melting mirror alludes to the potential for reflection offered by this kind of role-playing.
The film does not follow a linear narrative, and the actors are limited to carrying out the presenta-tion of a minimalist script. Zintel deliberately emphasizes the artificiality of the actors’ speech, the words in the film are spoken by a speech synthesizer, his actors are used as if they were simply shells of bodies. Shimmering lights and glitter turn the surfaces of their bodies into aesthe-tic effects.
Each individual passage of text is a miniature condensed narrative, which Zintel has woven toge-ther out of lyrics from famous bands and his own texts. The film’s images provide only minimal information, while the actual narrative takes place in the viewer’s mind. Triggered by images that evoke the spoken text, a kind of invisible film is created, a visionary world, comparable to the drug experiences to which some of the texts specifically refer.
We are taken to a world of violence and horror that is the polar opposite to the beauty seen in the film’s images, the glittering, sparkling surfaces of the plant arrangements and portraits. “But I am unimpressed, because destruction is just decoration,” Zintel sums up this contradiction and has his actors constantly repeat the phrase, like a mantra.
