1. Higher education funding is in crisis. What are needed are projects with a small budget and big impact.

In Small Budget BIG Impact, Sheppard Robson Partner and Design Director Rod McAllister visits a range of small scale but highly effective and transformative projects at Bournemouth University, University of Southampton, London South Bank University, University of Kent, School of Oriental & African Studies (SOAS), London School of Economics (LSE), Royal Veterinary College and the University of Birmingham.

It is still not clear how the changes in student funding will affect the structure of higher education in the UK, but clearly some radical and imaginative thinking will need to be applied to the sector if the place for universities in the national economy is to be preserved.

  2. UK universities and higher education institutes have their backs against the wall. Funding is tight and competition is rife. Money is the problem and the solution at the same time.

In Resurrection we travel to six projects where higher education institutes have made the best of some quite unpromising old structures to revitalise the campus using the fewest possible resources: London South Bank University, University of Warwick, Dublin Institute of Technology, Universita IUAV di Venezia, Central St Martin’s, University of the Arts London

These examples, and many others, demonstrate that the adaptive reuse of existing structures can not only be practical but fuses the past and the future in a way that is appealing an evocative. Universities have adopted old buildings for hundreds of years. It’s a fine tradition and a model of sustainability.

  3. For Universities, attracting students and staff has become a cut throat business. Some Universities are consolidating but others are seeking to distinguish themselves with unique courses, fresh branding, and distinctive campus design. Out of the Box explores the role that architecture has played in the reinvention and reinvigoration of Universities and other higher education institutions including: University of Greenwich, Ravensbourne College, Napier University, Lancaster University, Loughborough University, University of Delft and Aalto University.
