USP Conference on cosmology, large-scale structure and the first objects

Part 1 of the lecture by Brian Schmidt (Australian National University & Nobel Prize in Physics, 2011) on "Supernovas and Dark Energy", delivered at the University of Sao Paulo on Feb. 4, 2013 during the "USP Conference on cosmology, large-scale structure and the first objects". The slides used for this talk can be found at http://uspconference.if.usp.br/multimedia/brian_schmidt_usp-brazil/

This conference was organized by the University of Sao Paulo, through the office of the Dean of Research (Pró-Reitoria de Pesquisa), with the help of the Astronomy Department and the Physics Institute.

The USP Conference (see http://uspconference.if.usp.br/multimedia/ for slides of the talks!) covered key issues of Cosmology, from particle physics, fundamental gravitation, cosmic background radiation, dark matter and dark energy, large-scale structure, simulations of the formation of structure in the Universe, as well as comparisons to observations. The conference also explored the frontiers of our knowledge about the First Objects, the farthest observable stars and galaxies detectable from radio through optical up to the ultra high energy gamma-ray bursts.
The USP Conference was sponsored by the Office of the Dean of Research of the University of São Paulo (Pró-Reitoria de Pesquisa da USP), with help from LACEGAL, a European Comission Framework Program 7 on Galaxy Formation. The Local Organizing Committee was composed by Elcio Abdalla (IF-USP), Raul Abramo (IF-USP), Beatruz Barbuy (IAG-USP), Eduardo Cypriano (IAG-USP) and Ronaldo de Souza (IAG-USP).
