    Stories of Independence
    Jayde

Jayde was born with microphthalmia, a developmental disorder of the eyes. Now 15 years of age, she is considered legally blind with almost no vision.

Jayde’s Mother Nicole: Me as a parent, I want to see my child be able to develop and sometimes as parents we mollycoddle our kids a little bit, but most of the time she’s pushed to do the same things every other child has done. She’s in a good group of kids, they just take her for what she is.

Jayde: “I’m not fussed, I go with the flow. I don’t really worry about much, just being a teenager. Being normal.”

Jayde’s Mother Nicole: I see my role just slowly...just coming away.

No matter what tries to pull you down and what you have to go through, there is still something to smile for. It’s altered the course of my family’s life and it’s changed how I view life, and I think I’m much more grateful for life. It’s not in my nature to ask for help and that’s a lesson I’ve had to learn as well; to let the guard down and go ‘you know what, please I need help’. Because it is, it is unrelenting. That constant, what if? We’ve got to plan for this, this could happen. The ability to have downtime really doesn’t exist. A lot of routine. It sounds terrible saying this, but we don’t know how long we will have with Marc. He has taught me so much, just so much. Haven’t you? Hey? You’ve taught Daddy lots too, and even your little brother and everyone who meets you. Hey? He is the true teacher. He really is.

    Stories of Independence
    Liam Haven

At age 19 Liam Haven was hit by a shell whilst serving in Iraq.

He was left with 2% vision.

I mean I had a good home life as a child, but a bad childhood. I was one of those kids that got picked on constantly. I joined the Army and the Army changed my entire life. To have that torn away from you, it gutted me. So, I started drinking. I’d wake up, I’d drink. I’d go to work, I’d come home and drink. I started playing guitar as a rehab tool, and it became my escape. And I realised that, I’d accepted the fact that I was blind all these years, but I hadn’t really dealt with it. Getting back your independence at the very end of it, that’s you coming out and you finishing the grieving process. VisAbility is its own community. I run into so many people who do similar things to me. They still go out, they still do, you know, very outlandish, outdoor activities. And they think like I think. When you wear a mask, it always is going to crack.
