Vision Screening and Amblyopia

  1. Photoscreener use demonstrating 9 different objective screening devices. Photoscreeners are the Plusoptix S09, iScreen, Pediavision SPOT, MTI, Gateway DV-S20, Canon TX1 and the iPhone 4. Remote auto refractors are the Welch Allyn Suresight and the Retinomax. Amblyopia risk factors are detected including high anisometropia, hyperopia and astigmatism as well as strabismus. Blindness due to amblyopia can be cured with early detection and thorough treatment with spectacles +/- patching, atropine or surgery. ABCD-Vision.org

  2. You can help eliminate amblyopia blindness, or check visual acuity in patients any age, and of any language with this free, valid surround-HOTV acuity kit downloadable from ABCD-Vision.org. You can fold age-appropriate 20/40 (Kindergarten and younger) or 20/30 (older than Kindergarten) test box to randomly present from 10-feet (3 meters) single, surround HOTV optotypes; 3 out of 4 correct to pass. If the patient has youth- or language communication difficulty, use the accompanying Matching Card with instructions. Avoid the disaster of missing an amblyopic patient by patching the non-tested eye using "No-Peeking" patches. Reduce False-Positive referrals with a pinhole to select less-urgent, milder forms of refractive error.

  3. Concepts of pediatric vision screening to detect amblyopia including WHO guidelines, AAPOS Uniform standards for Gold Standard Exam, Instrument referral criteria, ROC curve, statistics of sensitivity, specificity and PPV, ARF prevalence and natural history (kinetics) are presented for the AAO ONE Network POWER educational format. Presented by the Alaska Blind Child Discovery program (ABCD, 3500 Latouche #280, Anchorage 99508 (907)561-1917). ABCD-Vision.org

  4. Photoscreening is a medical diagnostic test using a camera with close flash-to-lens distance producing "red reflex" in the pupils. While 95% of normal-seeing children have symmetric red pupils, a crescent of light in the pupils is produced by defocused eyes. Children who grow up never focusing will have permanent vision impairment form AMBLYOPIA. Photoscreening early (age 1-2 years, age 3-4 years and Kindergarten entry) can prevent blindness.
