Two canoes and a kayak drop one of the steepest gorges in North Carolina on Christmas Day
A hard-to-catch jewel of the Jocassee drainage, the Thompson plummets somewhere between 400 and 800 ft per mile in its final decent into the lake. The enormous slides include the sieve-and-sheetmetal choked "Amputator" and the huge entrance slide that leads into "Skatepark." Dozens of other notable drops litter the Class V run.
