WOLBI Bites - Live For More

In my left hand is a spool of thread. In my right hand is a pair of … wrists. Now I’ll take this thread and tie it around the wrists 3 times. How easy is it to break this bond?
Hey Guys– I’m Steve Nicholes from Word of Life Bible Institute – on beautiful Jej Island, which has 4 seasons here in South Korea.
Helping me today, lending her wrists is my daughter, Abby Lou. “Abby, can you break this bond?” … Look at that. She made it look easy.
In the second book of the Bible, the book of Exodus, the children of Israel were in bondage and slavery in Egypt. They made bricks out of straw and built large cities in Egypt. They were beaten, abused and thought they were going to die.
The word Exodus means ex – out and odus – the way. Exodus is the story of the exit, the way out of slavery and into freedom.
But the most awesome thing was that as they go out God goes with them. And for the first time God shows them His presence … first up on Mt. Sinai. And then He had them make a tabernacle, a tent house for God and put it right in the middle of their camp, with thousands of little tents on all sides of the tabernacle.
Listen – the big lesson I learn from Exodus is this: God brought His people out of bondage and slavery and into freedom. But true freedom only came when God was with them. And God wanted to be right in the middle of their lives … where every day when then they woke up, He was there.
Today we are not forced into slave labor like they were in Exodus. But many of us are in our own kinds of slavery. Today’s top addictions are drugs (including alcohol), technology (including computers and smart phones), food (overeating), sex (including pornography), gambling, even shopping.
At first we don’t think it’s a big deal. And we don’t see ourselves as slaves to these things. We just enjoy these things … a lot … until we are CRAZY about them (Abby comes back) just like thread … little by little … they get into our lives. We think we can quit … anytime we want to. But as time passes by … we just don’t want to. And they take over … until … we’re … addicted. (Abby fights the bonds). We’re bound. We’re enslaved.
We’re all addicted to something or some-one. What are you addicted to? An addiction is something you give your time, your passion, your heart, your soul, your mind, your body to. In fact. An addiction is a worship disorder. The Bible calls it idolatry.
In this book of Exodus God gave His children 10 big commands. And the first 2 were “There is only one God. worship only Him.” Seek Him, trust Him, enjoy Him, follow Him, love Him, copy Him, pursue Him. Worship only Him.
You see, the drug addict worships alcohol or drugs. The guy addicted to technology can spend hours, days, weeks worshipping a game or the discovery of new information. The person addicted to eating worships food. The adulteress or the guy addicted to porn worships and adores sex. The gambler worships money. The one addicted to shopping worships new stuff. That is where his identity, comfort and satisfaction comes from. The proud person and the one who is always looking at himself in the mirror – they worship themselves … Who do you worship? What are you addicted to?
How do I stop being a drug addict, food addict, sex addict, tech addict, money addict worship God alone … love Him more than anyone else … seek Him, trust Him, follow Him, copy Him, chase after Him.
The only way to be free is to have God in the middle of our lives. To wake up to Him every morning … to ask for His wisdom and advice for the issues we are facing thru the day … to be constantly looking for ways to magnify and glorify Him with those
When you are here with us at SYME or WOLBI we encourage you to let God be in the middle of your life – let Him be the big cheese on every slice of your pizza … not just Sunday but every day … not just for spiritual things but for everything.
How are you doing? Where do you need to be? These days do you worship God … more than anything or anyone else? How is your Quiet Time? Are you involved in a good church? Are you sharing with your family and friends what God is doing in your life? Don’t waste your life! Live … for more!
