Woman Is

  1. A critique of national formation, Woman Is questions the thought that women are the bearers of our country through reproduction, which as a result leads to the allegory of countries as women requiring male protection. Woman Is toys with the idea that historically land and sea have been regarded as feminine, and shores serve as a port of entry that allows for the effeminization by colonizers over land, people, and cultures. Highlighting this fact are movements made by male figures on sand scarring the land. Male prowess triumphs over the social constructions of feminine weakness as colonizers assert their dominance in a patriarchal power system. The project inverts the notion of objectification of woman by projecting history's victors, represented by two men in positions of vulnerability. The men’s actions gradually evolve into embodiments of female gestures, blurring the lines between each gender’s social performance. In this case of reversed voyeurism, the perversion of gender norms strikes a critical discussion of the behavioral expectations that are so deeply ingrained in our society.

Drew is a visual and performance artist whose work addresses issues of representation, particularly that of sexuality and gender performance. His works challenges the patriarchal and colonialist assumptions so prevalent in our society. By presenting men in vulnerable and exposed positions he challenges viewers to re-imagine their position in a society where their position is unquestioned. His work, Woman Is, A critique of national formation, questions the thought that women are the bearers of our country through reproduction, which as a result leads to the allegory of countries as women requiring male protection.
