Muay Thai World Stand Off - August 18th, 2012

In the 1st professional fight of the evening Neungsiam “The Rock” Samphusri originally from Thailand battled Ognjen Topic from North Jersey MuayThai in the United States.

At age 37 Samphusri entered wearing blue trunks while Topic at an age of 26 entered wearing red trunks. This fight pitted youth against experience as top up-and-coming prospect Topic is 11 years younger than the former multi-time champion Samphusri.

In the 1st round both fighters were both very technical. It was very clear that Topic attempted more overall strikes in the round. Samphusri was very comfortable as he fought with his back against the ropes for most of the round without attempting to circle out. Instead he stood his ground and looked to counter much of what Topic was doing. Throughout the round there wasn’t much movement as the fighters both stood directly in front of each and just continued to exchange punches and kicks.

In the 2nd round Topic came out very aggressive but Samphusri was great defensively. For the entire second round Samphusri fought with his back against the ropes and was quick to counter many of the attacks from Topic.

In the 3rd round there was more movement as the fight transitioned between the center of the ring and the corner to the ring. Many times Samphusri would back into a corner then press forward with his attack then move back to the corner and do the same thing. The number of punches and kicks between the two fighters seemed about even.

After the first 3 rounds of fighting with his back against the ropes Samphusri came out with a differently strategy for round 4. He now became the aggressor and began to pursue Topic around the ring. Samphusri definitely appeared to have stepped up his intensity several notches as he unleashed more attacks than Topic while keeping him off balance for the entire round. Samphusri’s attacks were precise and it proved to be a difficult round for Topic.

Both fighters fully engaged each other in the 5th and final round with the amount and punches and kicks seeming just about even. The round seemed close just as the entire fight itself seemed very close and difficult to call.

When it was all said and done this fight just like the other pro fights would go to the judge’s scorecard for a decision. The result was a split decision the first judge scored it 48-47 for Samphusri, the second judge scored it 48-47 for Topic and the third judge scored it 49-46 declaring Samphusri the winner by split decision.
