Happy 4th of July America! Let's keep climbing that long, rugged path to freedom and prosperity. Here's to another 242 years.
About the video:
In 2009 I worked for one of the coolest independently owned radio stations in the U.S., 103.1 WRNR FM. We threw a party for Obama's first inauguration and fellow Chicagoan Andrew Bird played an intimate, morning concert for station listeners in Annapolis, MD at Rams Head On Stage.
After the show I drove Andrew Bird to the Black Cat Club in D.C. where he was scheduled to play an evening inauguration party concert on a stacked bill of Chicago musicians. During our drive we listened to WRNR and Andrew commented that it was "well curated".
Skipping forward to the present (along with lots of details) I unearthed these recordings and began working on the edit a few weeks ago thinking a July 4th release would be cool. It was such a unique event to remember and work on in the context of the last few years....
Literally as I was locking the edit last Thursday I heard the news about the Capital Gazette shooting. I was emotionally gutted. Annapolis is my hometown.
While I didn't know any of the shooting victims personally, for the last several weeks my thoughts have been with my friends and family who live in Annapolis and frequent the area near the shooting. My brother even reminded me that The Capital Gazette was our first employer in the early 90s when we worked as paper boys.
Mr. Bird, I know it may not be entirely up to you, but if you could find it in your heart to allow this video to exist I'd be forever grateful and would consider that car ride (which was never reimbursed) paid in full. Thank you for your generosity of spirit that day on Tuesday January 20, 2009. I hope you enjoy this.
I make no claims of copyright to any of this material. Many thanks to all those who helped in the production.
